OCLRA supports effort to curb salt runoff to Lake Julia

OCLRA board member and Oneida County Supervisor Bob Thome is working with the Rhinelander School District, Nicolet College, Oneida County Planning and Zoning, Wisconsin Lakes and the DNR on plans to mitigate salt-bearing runoff from parking lots into Lake Julia. The lots in question are at the college and at Crescent Elementary School. Analyses conducted by the Lake Julia Lake Association have found significant increases in salt in the lake in recent years. Remedies being discussed include capturing the runoff in retention basins and, likely more effective, minimizing the use of salt while maintaining safe conditions on the lot surfaces.
